How to Export Unsaved WhatsApp Contacts From a Group

A recurring assumption about WhatsApp exports is that you only get the people already in your address book, and that everyone else comes back empty. It is a reasonable guess. It is also wrong.

Whether you have saved someone has no bearing on whether their phone number exports. In an ordinary group, an unsaved member's number comes through exactly as a saved member's does.

Saved contacts are the minority, by a long way

This is worth quantifying, because the scale surprises people. On a real, heavily-used account we counted every record in WhatsApp's local contact store — 20,358 of them:

That 1,955 figure lines up almost exactly with the number of contacts actually saved on the device — 1,953. In other words, the address book explains all of it and nothing is being missed.

So roughly nine out of ten people you encounter through WhatsApp groups were never saved by you. If exports only covered saved contacts, they would be close to useless for everyone.

What an unsaved contact looks like in the file

The difference between saved and unsaved shows up in the name column, not the number:

A blank name beside a valid number is not a partial failure. It is what an unsaved contact correctly looks like. You have their number; you simply never gave them a label.

The one thing an export cannot invent is what you would have called someone. Everything else about an unsaved contact is there.

Why we leave the name blank rather than filling it

There is a temptation to put something in an empty name cell, and both of the obvious options are worse than blank.

Earlier versions of this tool, and many others still, write WhatsApp's privacy mask into the name field — an entry that looks like +91••••••••93. It appears in a field called displayNameLID, so a naive read treats it as a name. On a real 12,635-row export that put a masked non-name into 47.6% of name cells.

The other common filler is the literal string Unknown, which occupied another 36.3% of rows.

Between them, more than eight rows in ten carried something in the name column that was not a name. The underlying data was fine. The presentation made a working export look broken — and that is exactly what people reported. A blank cell sorts, filters and deduplicates cleanly; Unknown does none of those things. Why WhatsApp shows a name you never saved

The middle row of that table confuses people, so it is worth separating the two kinds of name an export can find.

An address-book name is one you created. It lives on your device, you control it, and it is the reason a contact reads "Priya — plumber" rather than a number.

A push name is one the other person set for themselves in their own WhatsApp profile. It travels with them. You see it in group chats beside people you have never saved, and it is why an unfamiliar number in a group still shows something readable.

Our export prefers the address-book name, falls back to the push name, and leaves the field blank if neither exists. Those roughly 2,909 push names are doing real work — without them, nine out of ten rows would be nameless rather than about half.

Two things to know about push names before you rely on them:

• They are self-declared and unverified. People use nicknames, business names, emoji, or nothing at all. A push name is a label, not an identity.
• They change. Someone who updates their profile name changes what future exports show. A name captured today is a snapshot, which is a good argument for keeping the original export file rather than only a cleaned-up copy.

The one case where unsaved numbers really are missing

If a large share of rows have no number at all, check what kind of group it was.

In WhatsApp Community sub-groups — particularly announcement-only ones — WhatsApp withholds member phone numbers by design, for saved and unsaved members alike. Measured yields in those groups ran from 2% to 38%. Every ordinary group we measured returned 100%.

This has nothing to do with your address book and cannot be fixed by saving anyone. Full detail.

Getting the numbers into your phone afterwards

If you genuinely want the unsaved numbers saved, the export gives you a clean route:

1. Export the group to CSV.
2. Open it in Google Sheets and check the phone column imported as text — this matters more than it sounds.
3. Rearrange to match Google Contacts' import format (a Name and a Phone 1 - Value column is enough).
4. Import into Google Contacts, which syncs to your phone.

Two cautions before you do. First, importing several hundred people bloats your address book permanently and there is no clean undo — consider whether a spreadsheet was already sufficient. Second, saving a number and having a relationship with its owner are different things: an address book full of strangers from a group you were briefly in is not a contact list, and messaging them because you now have their number is how numbers get reported.
